Tips and info
Are you paying benefits for ineligible employees?
September 2003Employees from Americore and similar work-study programs are not eligible for unemployment benefits, yet employers often inadvertently create liability for themselves by reporting these employees for unemployment purposes. Reporting them for other purposes is proper, but if you report them for unemployment purposes, the state will consider them eligible employees and will pay them benefits should they apply and otherwise qualify.
If their names appear on unemployment reports prepared for the state by your payroll department or a payroll company, the names should be deleted or lined out, and the total recalculated. If these names have appeared on reports in the past, you should go back at least five quarters, prepare corrected reports, and submit them to the state.
