What do state unemployment agencies look for?
January 2005When state agencies rule on unemployment claims they generally expect employers to practice prudent business policies. The following is a description of what States consider when making determinations:
The employer needs to show good personnel policies.
- Reasonable work rules.
- Employee handbooks and/or posted rules.
The employee needs to understand the requirements of his/her job.
- Give a full job description during orientation.
- Review the employee's performance continually.
The employee should be given time to meet your standards.
- Explain what needs to be improved.
- Explain what will happen if the pattern is not corrected.
The employer must apply the policies uniformly.
- Disciplinary warnings must be given in a consistent pattern.
- A discharge must meet the requirements stated in your policy.
